Clare Chapman breakfast briefing

Tesco has remodelled its HR operations to focus on its staff’s four key values, according to the supermarket giant’s group personnel director Clare Chapman.

At last week’s HR Directors Club breakfast briefing at Lincoln’s Inn in London, Chapman told members that Tesco had done “a lot of hard work on values”.

Staff said they wanted to be treated with respect, a manager who helps them, an interesting job, and the opportunity to get on, she said.

“We have re-architected our personnel operating model against these four values and we don’t do anything that doesn’t improve these four things.”

She added that there had been “a sea-change in personnel. Our role is to make the values of the business concrete and to articulate them so people know what we’re talking about.”

This is why Tesco uses the term personnel, she said, “because staff don’t know what HR means”.
